The Financial Services Industry for BeginnersThe Financial Services Industry for BeginnersThe financial tafelgeschirrs industry encompasses many types of geschftslebenes involved in managing money and plays a vital role in the worlds economy. The industry as a whole is vast and includes companies engaged in activities such as investing, lending, insuring, securities trading and issuance, asset management, advising, accounting, and foreign exchange. Because of its large and diverse landscape, the financial services industry offers a wide range of career options. Retail and Commercial Banking Retail and commercial banking are sectors of the financial services industry that people tend to be most familiar with- thats how you do your everyday personal and business banking. These types of institutions offer checking and savings accounts, accept deposits, lend money, issue credit and debit cards, perform foreign currency exchanges, and offer other basic financial products to individual s and businesses. Career options in retail and commercial banking include bank tellers, branch managers, loan officers, marketing and operations executives. Investment Banking Investment banks are intermediaries that help companies access capital markets, such as the stock and bond markets. They have individual customers as well, but individuals are not their primary source of business. Investment banks generally handle more complex financial transactions, such as facilitating company mergers and acquisitions, issuing shares of stock when a company goes public, acting as an adviser for companies, securities trading, underwriting new debt and equity securities, and performing financial research. Many types of jobs are available at investment banks, including those facilitating mergers and acquisitions, issuing securities, or trading stocks and bonds at the trading desk. Also included are financial advisers and consultants. Hedge funds also pertain to investing but are privately o wned investment funds as opposed to mutual funds, which are owned by public companies. The types of careers available at these companies include financial advisers, analysts, traders, portfolio managers, and more. Venture Capital and Private Equity These types of businesses involve investing money in private companies in exchange for partial ownership or a percentage of the profit. Venture capitalists usually focus on startups in their early stages with the hopes of selling them once they become profitable. Often, these investors play some role in running the companies they invest in, and offer guidance and expertise to help them become successful. Jobs in private equity and venture capital include the investors themselves who are often partners in a firm, their support staff or associates, and analysts. Accounting Accounting is another broad sector within the financial services industry. In general, accountants record, maintain, and analyze financial accounts for individual s, companies, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies. Earning a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential is required for some, but not all, careers in accounting. The Big Four public accounting firms are Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst Young, and KPMG. These provide accounting and auditing services to the majority of the largest publicly traded companies in the world. Insurance The insurance sub-sector of the financial services industry exists to help individuals and businesses calculate and mitigate potential risks for financial loss. Workers in the insurance industry include sales reps who sell policies for an insurance company, brokers who work with people or companies to find an appropriate insurance plan, and customer service representatives who help customers navigate their policies. More advanced insurance careers include actuaries, who use advanced mathematics to calculate insurance rates and risks, and underwriters, who evaluate, approve, or deny insurance applications, taking potential risk into account. Insurers employ many people in administrative and technical positions too.

Learn How Not To Get Sued in Business

Learn How Not To Get Sued in BusinessLearn How Not To Get Sued in BusinessDont break the law. This may sound like common sense, but thousands of small geschftsleben owners routinely violate laws by Not Registering or Legally Establishing A Business,Failing to Report Income or File Taxes Properly,Copyright, Patent, or Trademark Infringement. In the eyes of the law, criminal cases may put the burden of proof on the prosecutor, but most geschftlicher umgang issues are handled in civil court where the rules are a lot different. It is not that difficult to sue a geschftliches miteinander, and even if the case gets tossed out or is decided in your favor, it could cost you thousands to hundreds of thousands to battle an issue out in court. Lawyers Can Help Protect Your Business Another common reason business owners (especially employers) get sued is because they create documents (employee manuals, contracts, legal forms, and even email communications) that set them up for lawsuits. It i s important that you have someone qualified to help you set up any document that shows or establishes how your business is set up or run. This is especially important with complicated business structures like corporations, and businesses with partners or investors. Just about anything in writing can be used in a court of law either to help you or to hurt you. Using the wrong words in documents hurt your business later down the road if you are ever sued. There are many free, or affordable legal resources available to women business owners, and when you do need the help of an attorney, ask the firm if they have a qualified paralegal (cheaper) who can help you set up or review your legal documents. Many attorneys will work on contingency (they get paid only if they win a lawsuit for you) or may even offer a free initial consultation. To find an attorney call your state bar association. All businesses, including home-based businesses, that generate income, sell a product or service, use a fictitious name, or take any sort of tax deduction must Be Properly Licensed and RegisteredHave an EIN Number (unless you are a sole proprietor)Report income, andFile Tax Returns (either on a personal return or a business return and sometimes, on both) If There is Money Involved, the IRS Wants to Know Even if you do not make enough money (or have enough credits or deductions) that you actually do not end up paying Federal income tax on a personal tax return, if you get any kind of a paycheck you will still need to Report Income EarnedHave FICA deducted, andIf you are self-employed, you may also need to pay self-employment taxes on any profits from a sole proprietorship. If you pay out any money to employees (including yourself or your spouse) the IRS requires you to submit certain forms and information about the employee(s). fassons you should be familiar with include IRS Form W-4 Employees Withholding Allowance CertificateIRS Form W-9 Request for Tax Payer Identification Num ber and CertificationIRS Form 1040 Schedule SE (If you earn more than $400 from your business) If you run a tax-exempt organization, the IRS has strict reporting guidelines that require to you track how and where money is spent (in addition to where your income came from). Copyright, Patent, and Trademark Violations Understanding industry trends is important and you should study them routinely. You need to know your competition, as well as what products and services people are buying. But relying on knock-off ideas will never make you independently wealthy and could be breaking the law. Never try to capitalize on a marketing idea, product, slogan, jingle, or logo that has been protected by law. If you see something in print, or someone else is already selling it, assume that it is protected. Research what you can and cannot do before you launch a business idea. To Limit Liability Risks in Business, Get Insurance Every single business and business owner must have insurance An y time you conduct business you open yourself to some legal exposure. Even if your business is completely on the up-and-up, this will not prevent someone from at least trying to file a lawsuit of some kind against you or your company. Having the right type and amount of insurance coverage is not just a good idea but in many cases, business insurance is required by law, necessary to get funding and contracts or to simply operate your business.

5 Ways Youre Hurting Your Reputation at Work- The Muse

5 Ways Youre Hurting Your Reputation at Work- The Muse 5 Ways Youre Hurting Your Reputation at Work- The Muse As a professional managing the trajectory of your career, one of the most important assets you have is your reputation: what other people think of you, your workplace performance, and how you behave around others. Your character says a lot about your competence, likeability, and credibility as a professional. I don’t visit a restaurant without looking at online restaurant reviews. And I sure wouldn’t choose an Airbnb without consulting the comments of people who have already stayed there. It’s unlikely that anyone will hire you, accept an introduction, or share his expertise without others recommending you in a similar way. How people advocate for you, and what they’ll say about you to others is sort of like a Yelp review of your career and overall demeanor. You want as many stars as you can get. The truth is that this social proof holds weight, whether you’re deciding where to eat in a new city, or tracking down the references of a potential hire. What other people think about you and how they speak of you and your accomplishments and work ethic matters to your career. These five tips will show you not only how you might be sabotaging a glowing endorsement without knowing it, but also how to take corrective action. 1. Ignoring the Social Scene When you blow off company activities that involve employees and partners or spouses, you could be losing great opportunities for a praise-worthy review. You may think these events are not worth your time. Or you might be a die-hard introvert and prefer to do your own thing after office hours. But if you never participate in post-work social activities, you're failing to create memorable impressions with people who could be potential networking allies. Imagine having a lovely conversation with your colleague’s husband, telling him how awesome his wife is and how much you enjoy working with her. Now imagine that one day some months later, this same husband, asks if his wife- your co-worker- knows anyone who might be the perfect candidate for a job in his own company. And it just so happens that you totally fit the bill and are looking to make a move. See where I’m going with this? Every conversation could lead to an opportunity, a referral, an introduction, and eventually even a terrific job opportunity. If you come to the holiday gathering 15 minutes before the event ends and hover in the corner with your one office friend, you miss the possibility of making a great impression on a stranger. 2. Thinking Only People With Status Matter There’s a saying that goes, “Treat the janitor with the same respect you treat the CEO.” There’s a reason for this. People in positions of power are not the only ones you must pay attention to. Others will notice how you speak to the receptionist, the fresh-faced intern who just came on board, the waiter at a business lunch, or the maintenance crew. Being rude and condescending to those less powerful associates won’t win you raving fans- it'll just earn yourself a reputation as being bad-mannered. When you treat everyone, regardless of title, with the same respect you treat the CEO or other senior leaders; you’ll telegraph a lot about yourself as a person who’s respectful of others- regardless of title or stature. Besides, you never know where that fresh-faced intern will land. You could be sitting across from her in an interview one day. And believe me, if you treated her badly, she’s not likely to forget it. 3. Not Building Relationships With Your Colleagues In our knowledge economy, one thing is clear: None of us work in a vacuum. We accomplish work through our relationships with others. So, there’s no way around it: How you show up to do your work, and how you choose to interact with members of your team and people in other departments speaks volumes about both your character and integrity. Establishing good rapport, including with people you work with but don’t know well, helps us live longer and more happily. It also reflects positively on your reputation and allows you access to more opportunities as your colleagues get to know, like, and trust you. A recommendation is as much a reflection on the giver as it is on the candidate. And if you aren’t comfortable fostering and cultivating professional relationships, it's unlikely that people will put their professional credentials on the line to support you. 4. Taking Credit for Others’ Work If there’s one thing that will keep you off the “top people I’ve worked with” list, it’s this. When you claim credit for the idea or work of others, you’re pretty much proving you’re not a team player, you can’t stand the idea of co-workers being successful, and that you’re willing to win at the expense of others. There’s nothing wrong with taking pride in your own accomplishments, but you’ll also do well to recognize, honor, and appreciate the laurels of others. And you certainly don't want to make the mistake of taking all the credit for work that was a team effort. Philosopher William James said it brilliantly: “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” Your colleagues will notice your appreciation of their work, and they’ll be much more likely to demonstrate the value that lies in yours. 5. Indulging in Office Gossip Participating in office gossip and criticism- malicious or light-hearted- of others will never serve your best interests- especially if you one day expect those same co-workers to speak highly of you when the time comes. Gossip is a trust breaker. If people know you’ll dish dirt about others, they’re going to wonder what you’re saying about them behind their backs. That’s certainly not fertile ground for getting glowing recommendations in the future. If you want people to vouch for you, they have to see you as someone who is trustworthy. Stay away from the office chatter pool, and if you have an issue with a particular colleague, initiate a conversation so that you can resolve the matter between the two of you. It's far better to get in the habit of directly communicating with your peers than endlessly complaining about a person or problem, a practice that's bound to reflect poorly on you. Whether you’re asking colleagues and managers for LinkedIn recommendations, or you’re tapping a former boss for reference in your job search, what people think about you matters. You can affect that future outcome in positive way when you take care of how you behave each and every day. Because, fact, hiring managers remove about 21% of candidates from contention, when references paint a less than glowing light. That’s a burn that can throw a brutal roadblock in your career. So take steps today to get that enthusiastic review you’ll need in the future.

How to Include Volunteer Work on Your Resume

How to Include Volunteer Work on Your Resume How to Include Volunteer Work on Your Resume Is it acceptable to put volunteer work on your resume when youre applying for jobs? It certainly can be, especially in certain situations. So, whats the best way to add volunteering and where should you list it? Read on to learn how to include volunteer work on your resume. Volunteer work can be an excellent way to  showcase key skills  such as event planning, fundraising, or problem-solving and should certainly be integrated with other work experiences on your resume. How to Include Volunteering on Your Resume Including volunteer work on your resume is an especially important tactic if: You are a recent college graduate with limited professional experience; If you have taken a significant amount of time away from the workplace to raise young children or to care for a sick family member; orYou have experienced a lengthy period of unemployment due to a depressed economy in your state or region. How can you incorporate your volunteer experience into your resume to gain the maximum benefit? The answer will depend, to some degree, on how related your volunteer experience is to your career target.   Related Volunteer Work Related  volunteer work  can be combined with related work experience under a category heading like Related Experience. If the volunteer work demonstrates a critical skill area, then it could be placed within a category with a functional heading like Fundraising Experience or Event Planning Experience.   In either case, the volunteer experience should be  listed just like a job  with a title that captures the essence of your role and a description which highlights  skills applied  and any accomplishments. As you list your accomplishments, it is also a good idea to quantify these contributions with tangible numbers (dollar amounts) or percentages. Trying too hard at work is not going to pay off, study finds

Trying too hard at work is not going to pay off, study finds Trying too hard at work is not going to pay off, study finds How hard should we try at work? Not too hard, a new international study analyzing the effects of work effort on health and career outcomes suggests. Turns out, pouring your all into your work is not going to pay off in the end.Using data collected across 2010 and 2015 from more than 50,000 people from 36 European countries, the researchers found that increased work effort is “associated with reduced well-being and inferior career-related outcomes.”To be better at your job, don’t try too hardThe researchers defined work intensity as “the level of effort supplied per unit of working time.” The harder employees worked in their allotted work time, the more likely they were to report stress, fatigue, and lowered job satisfaction and have inferior work outcomes around job security, recognition, and career prospects. This finding held true even in upper-level occupations. There is increasing attention around the effects of overtime work. We know that our bosses emailing us at midni ght about work is not good for our mental well-being. This new research shows us that the intensity of your work matters just as much as how long you spend doing it.For those of us who think that doing bonus projects is going to get us noticed at work, think again. Working too hard burns us out and makes us worse employees.  â€œOftentimes, workers both complain and boast about excessive work effort, perhaps because they accept inferior well-being while anticipating career-related progress. Our results could imply that the latter might not materialize,” the researchers concluded. It may sound paradoxical, but doing less at work can help us achieve more.  Ultimately, working harder or longer is not likely to lead to better work. In fact, the toll it takes on our bodies can lead to the opposite. One five-year study has found that if we work more than 65 hours a week, our performance and productivity sharply declines.

3 Reasons You Should Speak Up More at Work - The Muse

3 Reasons You Should Speak Up More at Work - The Muse 3 Reasons You Should Speak Up More at Work Here’s a situation I’m sure you’re familiar with: You’ve come up with an exciting idea that you think you and your colleagues will benefit from. But even though you feel your thinking is solid, you’re too afraid of speaking up about what’s on your mind. Sure, you think it’d be smart, but what if your boss doesn’t agree? And even worse, what if she thinks your entire concept is dumb? If you’re anything like me, you’ve kept your mouth shut when it came to this, and then watched as a colleague raised her hand to propose a very similar idea that your boss loves. While it sucks when that happens, it’s also proof that you’re smart enough to speak up more often when you have a good idea at work. If you’re still feeling anxious about it, here are a few more reasons why you are totally qualified to let your boss know that you’ve come up with something awesome. 1. You Wouldn’t Have Been Hired if Your Boss Didn’t Want Your Input No matter how hard you want to be on yourself, the reality is that you were not hired just because your boss settled on someone who was just “good enough.” The odds are that you went through a lengthy interview process that involved your manager picking you from a pile of resumes and continuing to move you through the process! Unless you’re working for the most unmotivated company on the face of the earth, your boss probably thought deeply about the type of person she wanted to hire for your role. Because of that effort, she was excited to bring you aboard to hear your thoughts on a lot of things. So, not only does she think you’re smart enough to speak up about the ideas you have, she probably expects you to do it more often. 2. Even Half-Baked Ideas Can Start Important Conversations When it comes to a major project that will take months to complete and require an enormous budget, it’s maybe not the best idea to say, “This thought is half-baked right now.” However, if you’re talking to your boss casually, it’s perfectly OK to say, “I’ve been thinking about this idea lately, and although I don’t have the answers, I was wondering if you had any feedback.” In the past, I used to get clammy around my supervisors in any context, and I assumed that any thought I ran by authority figures required a detailed spec sheet before I spoke up. However, in most cases, that’s the furthest thing from the truth. Even a half-baked idea might remind your manager about something important she’s been meaning to tackle. And when she remembers to get around it, don’t be surprised if you get a lot of credit for bringing that back to the surface. 3. If You Don’t Speak Up, Nobody Will Speak Up for You Yes, it’s frustrating when one of your colleagues spits out an idea that sounds almost identical to something you were thinking about. However, it’s not always guaranteed that someone else on your team will have the same idea. So, if you’re feeling inspired and have something to speak up about, it’s up to you to take the initiative and say what’s on your mind. While you might be thinking that the worst-case scenario involves someone else getting credit for something you thought of, what’s even worse is when you’ve got a world-changing idea that you’re just keeping to yourself, especially when your little secret could improve your company’s bottom line. Sure, you don’t want to merely propose a bunch of bad ideas willy-nilly, but unless you’re suggesting that every day should be Hawaiian shirt day, you’re doing your entire team a disservice by keeping your mouth shut. It’s no secret that speaking up to your boss, someone whom you respect and admire, can be scary, but that doesn’t mean you’re not smart enough to bring up an awesome initiative that you’ve got up your sleeve. The fact that you’re even reading this article is a good indicator that you’re not always wasting people’s time with your stupid thoughts. If you’ve come up with something that could help your team take a step forward, there’s no harm in saying something- so be bold and let everyone know what’s on your mind.
